Subject: serials inventory

Good morning!

I am finishing up my MLIS degree with an inventory project and would
appreciate some feedback/insight on the following issue.

I want to design a game-plan to do an inventory of serial holdings in an
academic library. We have approximately 4,000 titles including microfilm
and fiche. The main reason for this inventory is to find and correct
inconsistencies between the print serial holdings list (published as part
of a consortium list) and our PAC holdings. These inconsistencies are
related to the change-over in 1993 from Kardex-microlinx to the DRA serial
modules.

I started an inventory of the "A's" to get an idea of the types of
problems to be encountered. Out of 180 titles, 115 need some kind of
update/ correction. There are 3 distinct problem areas:
        1) cataloging/reference record issues requiring dept.head input
        2) basic corrections (typos, transposed numbers, etc.)
        3) updates to the consortium list
Time-consuming and tedium are the main drawbacks in trying to investigate
and then address anywhere from one of these problems to all 3 with just
one title. Coming up with the best "team" approach is where I am
currently stuck. I have searched the literature (Librarylit, InfoTrac,
Eric...) without much success. I got a few hits but nothing very
inspiring. I have also searched the archives of this listserv and found a
similar topic referred to in 1994. I am waiting to hear from the librarian
who made this query. In the meantime, I am talking with other
professionals both in and out of the library profession for their insight.

Thank you!
