Dear Linda,

You may be interested in a development project being conducted by
Blackwell's. In conjuction with 13 academic libraries in North Americ=
a and
almost 30 elsewhere in the world, we are developing a system to provi=
de
searching and retrieval of electronic journals from ten publishers
participating in the project (almost 300 e-journal titles). Indexed a=
re the
headers from the publishers, which includes author, title and abstrac=
t
fields. The full articles are available in PDF or other formats (vari=
es by
publisher), delivered either through a viewer on the user's workstati=
on or
via e-mail. We expect to make this service available to other librari=
es
beginning in January 1997, with many more publishers making their
publications available. A copy of a recent press release appears bel=
ow.
Please contact me directly if you would like more information.

Thank you,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

                BLACKWELL'S ELECTRONIC JOURNAL NAVIGATOR
                      DEVELOPMENT PROJECT LAUNCHED

Oxford, UK, 1st July 1996

Blackwell's announces the launch of a development project to provide =
access
to electronic journals. Thirteen North American libraries have agree=
d to
serve as partners in the project, to assist in the design of the user
interface, help resolve licensing issues with publishers and to deter=
mine the
best access options.

The thirteen libraries participating in North America as development =
partners
are:

    Cleveland State University
    Dartmouth College
    Michigan State University
    Ohio State University
    San Diego State University
    Simon Fraser University
    University of Chicago
    University of Minnesota, Duluth
    University of New Hampshire
    University of Tennessee, Knoxville
University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio
    University of Utah
    University of Western Ontario

Two of these libraries, Cleveland State and Ohio State, are members o=
f
OhioLINK, and will serve to address needs of consortia and similar
organizations. A total of forty libraries will be participating in t=
he
project including major academic and corporate libraries in the Unite=
d
Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and continental Europe.

Publishers participating in the initial stages of the project are lis=
ted
below:
    ASLIB
    Blackwell Science
    Blackwell Publishers
    Chapman and Hall
    Institute of Mechanical Engineers
    John Wiley and Sons
    Kluwer
    Oxford University
    Rapid Science Publisher
    Taylor and Francis

The contents of 250 electronic journals will be initially available i=
n the
project. The content of each journal will vary from publisher to pub=
lisher
but will minimally include tables of contents, abstracts and articles=
. One
of the aims of Blackwell's Electronic Journal Navigator is to provide=
 access
to material irrespective of location or format. The most prevalent f=
ormat is
Adobe PDF (portable document format), but material in Catchword RealP=
age
format and HTML is also included. In all cases access to free viewer=
s will
be provided.

The next steps in the project will be issuing usernames and passwords=
,
verification of logon and access capabilities, setting up and install=
ing
viewers, connecting to the service and evaluating basic functionality=
.

Throughout the project, management records of usage will be tracked, =
to
supply libraries with valuable collection development and access data=
. The
full electronic journal service will be made available to other libra=
ries
beginning in January 1997.
