Hello. I'd like to know if someone out there could please help me to learn
the difference between a microfilm cartridge and a microfilm cassette. I
have a 16 mm. film housed in a plastic box, and I don't know if this box
should be considered a cartridge, or a cassette. There are 007 codes for
both in the CONSER Editing Guide, and part of the definition of microfilm in
the CONSER Cataloging Manual states that it is "long strips of photographic
film that are mounted on reels, in cartridges, and in cassettes. The strips of
film together with the containers that house them are called respectively,
microfilm reels, microfilm cartridges, and microfilm cassettes."
Unfortunately though, the CCM fails to define a cartridge or a cassette,
neither does the CEG. I'm clear on what should be considered a microfilm reel,
but neither I, nor anyone I've asked here in technical services, understands
the difference between a cartridge and a cassette.
Thanks in advance--
Sincerely,
Dana Van Meter
