CHIEF CATALOG LIBRARIAN, Yale University Library
Minimum Rank: Librarian IV

Within the University Library, Technical Service units pursue a course of
continual change and innovation in building integrated, university-wide
scholarly information systems. These systems are designed to provide readers
rapid access to new materials in all formats as well as a high-quality
bibliographic record of Yale's extraordinary library collections. These
collections, which the Library has developed over the last three centuries,
continue to grow at nearly 100,000 titles per year and include an increasing
number of materials in digital form. To help sustain and shape its role in
the changing world of information resources, the Yale University Library seeks
an energetic and experienced catalog librarian to join its general management
team and the leadership of Technical Services. The Chief Catalog Librarian
will exercise leadership for the policies and procedures used by central as
well as school and departmental cataloging units of the Library. The Chief
Catalog Librarian will oversee the Library's participation in NACO, BIBCO, and
other national-level cataloging initiatives and programs. In addition, the
Chief Catalog Librarian will head the central Catalog Department in the
Sterling Memorial Library and will nurture a team approach to management,
foster creative improvements in cataloging practices, and cultivate an ethic
of service to the Yale community at large and specifically to units elsewhere
in the Library that focus on reference, instruction and collection
development. The Catalog Department consists of 21 librarians and 29 library
assistants organized in 6 teams responsible for bibliographic control of
curricular, general research, and special collection materials in a broad
range of disciplines and a wide variety of languages. The Department is also
responsible for maintaining the on-line catalog and for leading the Library's
effort to convert 4.5 million titles from the manual card file to electronic
form. The staff in the Department make use of a sophisticated set of
workstation and other automated tools to catalog over 85,000 titles a year in
all formats, reduce a 90,000 title cataloging backlog, and maintain a growing
on-line catalog of nearly 3.3 million titles and over 1.3 million authorized
headings. The Chief Catalog Librarian will serve on the Library's Technical
Services Management Group, the Library Management Council, and various other
key governing groups within the Library and is expected to be professionally
active. QUALIFICATIONS: An MLS from an ALA-accredited library school. At
least eight years of professional experience with demonstrated achievement
supervising staff, managing budgets, and administering cataloging activity,
preferably in a research library setting. Creative, dynamic, and flexible
leadership and team-building abilities. Strong service orientation and
problem-solving abilities. High-level knowledge of cataloging standards and
trends, including a command of authority control, subject analysis and LC
classification issues, sensitivity to the complexities of cataloging materials
in a wide variety of languages, and an appreciation of current developments
regarding the bibliographic control of networked information. Strong computer
skills, including experience with bibliographic services such as RLIN and
OCLC, automated systems such as Notis, and general office and network-based
tools. Excellent analytical and organizational skills. Excellent oral and
written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work well independently
and with others, including service providers, at a wide range of
organizational levels and in a rapidly changing and demanding environment.
