For budgetary purposes, we conduct use studies on a continuing basis.
Although we circulate journals (currently), we do not use a computer to
generate the use statistics. We also have open stacks.
Circulation dept student assistants are in charge of picking
up/reshelving issues. They bring the materials to the worktable in circ.
where they alphabetize and mark (hash marks) on a printout the number of
issues of each title. At the end of each term (quarter now, semester in
1997) we collect these printouts and count the hash marks, recording them
with our quarterly/semester statistics.
Probably, we will discontinue circulation of journals except for bound
volumes. Those will have barcodes and the computer will tally the use,
like it currently does for books.
Thanks.
