ASSOCIATE HEAD FOR SERIALS CATALOGING
Serials and Acquisitions Services Department
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Head, Serials and
Acquisitions Services, shares in the administration of the
department, including planning, personnel and budget management,
and policy development and implementation. May serve as Acting
Head in the absence of the Department Head. Directly manages the
Serials Cataloging Section, which consists of three librarians
and four support staff. Performs the full range of supervisory
responsibilities, including hiring, evaluation, and staff
development. Establishes serials cataloging standards,
procedures, and workflow, and adjusts same as conditions change.
Overall responsibility for contributions to cooperative serials
projects, such as CONSER and the BLC Union List of Serials.
Works in partnership with the Associate Head for Monograph
Cataloging in Bibliographic Access Services, to coordinate
policies, procedures, and standards, and to facilitate
cooperation and communication between the two units. Works with
Serials and Monograph Acquisitions to plan procedures and
workflow. Participates in systems planning as it relates to
Serials Cataloging. Communicates with public service units to
assess needs, clarify policies, and implement new procedures and
system modifications. Maintains knowledge of national
developments in serials cataloging and shares that knowledge
appropriately within the Libraries. Serves on committees and
task forces and participates in broader library activities as
appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Master's degree in library or
information science from an ALA-accredited program. Several
years of professional cataloging experience, preferably in a
large academic library, and significant experience with serials.
Knowledge of an on-line cataloging system and AACR2, LC
classification, LCSH, MARC and standard authorities procedures.
Understanding of cataloging issues related to various formats,
including digital resources. Demonstrated supervisory ability
and well-developed communication and analytical skills. Evidence
of initiative, flexibility, attention to productivity, and
ability to work creatively in a rapidly changing environment.
HIRING SALARY: $35,500 minimum. Actual salary based on
experience.
The MIT Libraries include five major subject libraries
(architecture and planning; engineering; humanities; science;
social sciences and management) and several branch libraries in
specialized subject areas. The Libraries contain more than 2.3
million printed volumes, over 21,000 serial subscriptions, and
extensive collections of microforms, maps, slides, photographs,
sound recordings, printed music, manuscripts, motion pictures,
and videotapes. The Libraries' automated system is Geac Advance.
The public catalog, Barton, is available within the Libraries and
on the campus network. The Libraries' WWW homepage
(http://nimrod.mit.edu/) presents information about library
services, access to numerous databases, and links to pertinent
Internet resources. MIT Libraries maintain membership in the
Association of Research Libraries, the International Association
of Technological University Libraries, the Boston Library
Consortium, and OCLC through NELINET.
Serials and Acquisitions Services is one of three collection
services departments. The staff of twenty-four people includes
nine librarians and fifteen support staff who are engaged in
serials cataloging and the ordering and receipt of monographs,
serials, and depository government documents, as well as the
gifts and discard programs. The Serials Cataloging Section
participates in the CONSER program.
