Re: Feedback requested on WWW journal project

This request has hit upon a problem which causes us considerable
difficulty - the use of a password for access to online journals. This
is very problematic for us because we have a large and ever-growing
number of these. We would much prefer access by IP address. It is very
difficult for us to script log-ons for access to online journals which
require a password and it is not acceptable for us to provide a library
staff member to key in a password. Those services which allow access by
IP address, such as MathSciNet and Encyclopaedia Britannica, are far
easier for us to provide to our users. While we realize that providers
need, and have every right, to protect their products and services, they
need to realize the difficulties libraries face in providing access to
their users. We urge all providers of online products to consider the IP
address alternative.
