Do you thrill to the prospect of introducing newbies to the wide range of information available on the Internet? Do you have interesting lists of Internet resources to share with other librarians? Have you developed ways to incorporate the Internet into your library support for users? If any of these questions are true and you will be at the American Library Association annual conference in New York, July 6 through 8 1996, you need to volunteer to present an Internet demo in the ALA Internet Demo room. Demos will be presented using a live Internet connection with either Macintosh or Windows software, including the latest WWW browsers and other graphical interfaces. Following are some topics which have been presented at other Internet room demos. Rather than pre-assigning topics to particular timeslots, I am requesting that you tell me what you would like to talk about, and what timeslot(s) you would be available to present a demo. Please list your preferred timeslot and at least one alternative timeslot to assist with scheduling. If you would be willing to present on more than one topic, please list alternative topics in order of preference. Remember, everyone wants to talk about the World-Wide Web, so offers for presentations on OTHER topics would be greatly appreciated. Intermediate or advanced topics are also popular, as long as you describe your intended audience clearly. Topics from the information service provider's side have been frequently requested, but difficult to locate speakers for, such as WWW site management, listserv setup=7F and ownership, etc. Potential topics: General Internet Introduction Children's & Young Adult Internet Resources Reference Tools on the Internet K-12 Internet Resources Federal Government Info Resources Business Resources on the Internet Medical Resources on the Internet Writing PERL/CGI Scripts for WWW HTML Tags and Editing Tools Archie, FTP, and Major Archive Sites World-Wide Web Search Tools Compared SLIP and PPP: Using GUIs with Dialup Connections Interactive Information Spaces using MOOs Managing your World-Wide Web Sites Presentations on specific commercial products or individual library systems are NOT appropriate for this venue. Please send a short description of your presentation, outlining specific resources and topics to be covered. Include a two-sentence "advertisement" for your session, with audience level indicated. Topics need to be covered in an hour, leaving time for audience questions. If you wish to distribute handouts, plan for 300 people, and note that there are NO photocopying facilities on site. If you need to connect your laptop to the video display or you have other special presentation needs or plans, specific descriptions of your plans should be included in your proposal, and you must schedule time to test the demo room equipment in advance of your presentation. The demo room equipment may not be able to accomodate some specific presentation configurations. The timeslots that are available include (please refer to timeslots by number in any correspondence): 1) Sat. July 6 10:30am - 11:30am 2) Sat. July 6 1:30pm - 2:30pm 3) Sat. Include your name, job title, library affiliation, and email address as part of the *BODY* of the message to aid future communications. Please include a short paragraph describing your experience with Internet demonstrations or training. Initial topic and timeslot confirmations will be sent as soon as possible after June 17, so you can begin preparing presentations.
