If we are binding volume in only one book then we just add vol. and year. If we bind a title in more than one book we add pages after the volume line in issues are numbered consecutively or nos. if not. If a volume covers an academic year we put the split year on spine (ie. Vol. 9, 1994/95). Occasionally we bind two small vols. together. David DAVID J. For example v. 1 beginning in Summer of 1995, ending in Spring 1996: 1 1995/96 Consequently, v.2 will look like this: 2 1996/97 The patron will be informed about the publishing schedule of the serial from the bibliographic record or the citations they are using. Hope this helps. Kingsolver" at Apr 23, 96 03:15:24 pm The spine of the volume echoes what is inside the boards--if it's half a year, full year or one month--that's what I was taught should be on the spine. Don't add extraneous information like "part 1" or "part 2" unless your serial clearly says the same thing on its title page (or somewhere clearly marked.) For example: UTNE READER UTNE READER no. 71-73 or no. 71-73 Sept.-Jan. Sept. 1995- Jan. 1996 1995-96 Hope this helps a little bit. When a volume spans two years like that we usually put on the spine the years it covers. ie volume 77, 1993-94. It gets more complicated when you have a volume that is huge where you end up with something like this: volume 77, 1993-94 Pages 1-793 and volume 77, 1994, Pages 794-1238. The issues in the second volume were all from just 1994, but the issues in the first part of volume 77 were in two different years. If you have just years to go by and no volume numbers there forms a pattern on the shelf of 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96 and so forth. If patrons have a month or season as part of the citation that they are looking up, then that helps them know which one it might be in as well. It is just how we work it here at this academic law library. :) Sincerely, Kaaren Pupino Thormodsgard Law Library School of Law-Room 161 University of North Dakota Grand Forks, ND 58202 e-mail: kaaren.pupino@thor.law.und.nodak.edu (8)----------------------- Date: Tue, 23 Apr 1996 15:16:21 CST From: Carrie Ferm 7316 <ALICF@AUGUSTANA.EDU> Organization: Augustana College - Rock Island IL Subject: Re: Binding query Comments: To: "Joy A. Kingsolver" <jkingsol@SPERTUS.EDU> Hi Joy, Binding preparation can be very tedious. I have the binder print exactly what is in the volume. I.E. v.15 July-Dec 1994 or v. 15 Sept-May 1994/95 IN some cases we even put the issue numbers on the spine, especially when I have to divide up a volume. We try do whatever makes identification easiest. Good luck. Since this is your first binding project, perhaps you would like to see what our "binding sheet" (instructions to the binder) looks like. Just give me your fax number and I will get a copy to you.
