This is how I would record the holdings in our catalog:

1986-1987
v.1 (1988) (no.1-no.2 lack vol. designation)*
v.2 (1989)-v.4 (1991)
v.5:no.1 (1992)-v.5:no.2 (1992)

*the note would go into subfield $z of the MARC holdings field
