Subject: mutilated or missing serials

Hello, I am a student of the library school in the University of Iowa.
I'm working on a group research project for a course with some fellow
students.  Our topic is serials' security problem.  We have serials
checkout window on the first floor, current periodicals on the second and
bound periodicals on the third.  All serials are open access except
special collections.

We are wondering what kind of efforts are made to protect the serials
from mutilation or theft in practical situations.  Our possible solutions
are:
1.  To put the serials and staff members on the same floor.
2.  To increase photo copy machines.
3.  To hire permanent staff for reshelving.

I would appreciate if you could give any comments or suggestions.
