charges to patrons for lost serials Nancy Cadmus 28 Feb 1996 22:55 UTC

Our library has been charging patrons $65 for each lost bound serial
volume, regardless of original or replacement cost. (By volume I mean bound
unit--a bound unit might be a fraction or a multiple of a complete volume).
The $65 breaks down to $40 for the actual volume and $25 for
processing/replacement costs. We know these charges need updating; not
many bound volumes can be replaced for $40.

We would like to know what other libraries are charging. Has anyone
worked out a per-volume cost that averages across all titles in the
collection?

Thanks. Please reply directly to me. I'll summarize if anyone else is
interested.
