Association announces a Pre-Conference Symposium to be held June
1, 1996 in Kansas City at the Annual Meeting.

MANAGING HEALTH INFORMATION RESOURCES FOR THE 21st CENTURY:

THE 2nd MLA SYMPOSIUM ON COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT IN HEALTH
SCIENCES LIBRARIES

Cost $275; includes lunch.  The Symposium has been approved for 8
MLA CE credits.  Early registration deadline Apr 1, final
deadline May 24.  Limited to 100 participants.

The Symposium is designed for librarians who select and manage
information resources in today's rapidly changing environment.
This year's session marks the 10th anniversary of the popular
first Symposium, and is dedicated to the memory of the late
Daniel T. Richards, Director of Biomedical Libraries, Dartmouth
College, founder of the Collection Development Section, dynamic
leader and organizer of both 1st and 2nd Symposia.

The Opening Session, THE CONTEXT FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES
features expert speakers who will explore three dynamic arenas
exerting influence on today's information needs: Patient Care,
Health Sciences Education, and the Research Environment.

      Patient Care:  Dr. David Voran, Executive Director,
           Information Technology, University of Kansas Medical
           Center

      Health Sciences Education: Dr. Helene Hoffman, Assistant
           Dean for Curriculum and Educational Computing, Adjunct
           Professor of Medicine and Director, Learning Resources
           Center, University of California San Diego School of
           Medicine

      Research Environment: Dr. Milton Corn, Associate Director,
           National Library of Medicine; Director, Extramural
           Programs

Following a question period, the group will divide into small
facilitated DISCUSSION GROUPS to further explore and consider
issues raised in the Opening Session.

The afternoon will feature a series of concurrent workshops on
COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES IN A CHANGING INFORMATION
ENVIRONMENT. Designed as 90-minute educational experiences,
workshops will address the following five topics:

      The Virtual Library & Resource Development
      Cooperative Resource Development
      Collection Evaluation & Assessment
      Financial Issues & Challenges
      Adapting the Selection Process

Participants will be able to attend two of the five workshops.
Earliest registrants will be given preference if sessions become
full.

The concluding SUMMARY SESSION, led by distinguished medical
librarian and former MLA President Judith Messerle, Director,
Countway Library of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, will
include an overview of program highlights; a synthesis of
discussion group and workshop experiences, and a provocative
analysis of health sciences library information resource
management in a futuristic context.
