PROGRAM AGENDA AND DESCRIPTION

Welcome (Collette Mak, OCLC, Program Moderator)

Both a Borrower and a Lender Be
Marshall Keys, NELINET
Mr. Keys will discuss the role libraries, librarians, reference, and
resource sharing will play in the move to access. What does the
information highway mean for library alliances, standards, shared databases?

Technology Will Free Librarians to Do... What?
Fred Weingarten, American Library Association
Mr. Weingarten will discuss the impact of new technologies on libraries and
librarians. Will technology free librarians to do more than just learn the
new technology? In an era of electronic access, is there really a
difference between reference and document delivery? What do our decisions
about access mean to the options available to patrons?

The Virtual What?
Suzanne Thorin, Library of Congress
Ms. Thorin will discuss the virtual library. Can we really rely on access
when so many libraries aren't connected? License agreements, intellectual
property, Title 17, author*s rights--what does this mean to access and the
virtual library?

Purchase Anxiety
Shirley Baker, Washington University, St. Louis
Ms. Baker will discuss the tension between ownership and access. Document
delivery providers, full-text, pay as you go--when we decide to rely on
access what does this mean to collections? What does it mean for
accreditation of curricula? In the electronic environment, who really makes
purchase decisions: ILL staff? Reference staff? Collection developers?
