I too would like to hear how others work with incomplete vols.  We at Smith
College insert an acid free preprinted sheet at time of binding saying:

        PLEASE NOTE:
        This volume lacks
        ____________________
        __________________
        The material is missing from
        the collection.  Photocopies
        of the articules can be obtained
        through Interlibrary Loan.

This seems to work for the 5 libraries that use it.
