Subject: What's Your Title Worth?
Thanx to all that responded to my job title posting. I received 20
or so suggestions and will use them in my campaign for a new title.
I'm a Periodicals Librarian, that's my title. But I feel as though I'm
much more than that. I believe that many of my responsibilities fall
under the broader umbrella of serials or serials aquisitions. Even-
though a majority of my job is related specifically to periodicals,
I find the word extremely limiting and somewhat demeaning. A vast
majority of the responses that I received said that Serials Acquisitions
Librarian would be the preferred title and that's the title that I've
been fighting for. Unfortunately, naming issues have the appearance
of encroaching on the powerbase of others and this is probably the
real concern. I don't want more responsibilites than I already have, I
guess I just want a title that has more status, more zip, more warm
fuzzies for my morale. I'm almost reducing this to a childish
demand, "I just want to have it!" A title says something about my
worth, not just for me; but also my worth to the institution. I would
feel more valued as an employee if my title was regal and impressive,
even if it's just being the Serials Aquisitions Librarian.
