Subject: technical info. center or library?

What's in a name?

We here at the (currently named) "Technical Information Center" at
Weyerhaeuser are contemplating changing our name to "Technical Library."

We want to do this largely because our customers have a hard time finding us
in the various company directories, both in print and online. It's
especially difficult for them to locate us in the now enormously large
company e-mail directory. We also want to do this because, as all
librarians know, libraries aren't just for books any more.

Our boss's boss doesn't like this idea. He said he thought it was okay from
a customer point of view, but that it points us backward instead of toward
the future, because the term, "library...makes everyone think about a
building with a collection of books rather than an information resource."

So we're taking a little survey of the lists that we're on to see what you
call your library or information center or information resource and any
comments you have on this "what's in a name" issue.

You can respond to me directly or to the list . Thanks in advance for your
time to do so.
Several of us are posting this message to various lists, so sorry if you've
received duplicates.
