OPTIONS FOR DEALING WITH SERIALS INFLATION
1. CANCEL TITLES
a. Identify core list of journals for disciplines that
account for the highest increases, such as physics,
chemistry, math, biology. Cancel journals that are not core.
b. Eliminate duplicates, especially between libraries within
the same campus
c. Monitor membership/combinations to ensure that all titles
are wanted
d. Take advantage of consortiums that purchase regional or
statewide subscriptions and cancel local subscriptions
e. If your patrons want daily newspapers only part of the
year, change the subscription to cover only part of the
year
f. Take advantage of use counts to notify faculty which
journals are actually used
2. INCREASE FUNDING OR FUNDS AVAILABLE
a. Bill back to academic departments
b. Gifts made of subscriptions by alumni
c. Switch vendors
d. Use gov docs and status as depository library to
receive certain serials
e. Donations to library foundation funds
f. Move memberships from large groups such as ACS and ACM
from agent to direct to avoid service charges
g. Encourage institutions to streamline their administrative
staffs and expenditures and put the resulting savings into
journal subscriptions
3. PAY-PER-ARTICLE
a. Use a service such as CARL UnCover Reveal which provides
table of contents of serials to notify faculty of
articles within cancelled journals
4. CHANGE FORMATS
a. Switch a journal from paper to microfiche
b. Get the journal in CDROM with fulltext articles
5. MISSING ISSUES
a. Take advantage of listservs such as BACKSERV to purchase
back issues
