At Saint Mary's College of California, we serve about 4,000 students; half
of which are traditional liberal arts undergraduate students...business and
education weekend/or evening/ or offcampus students make up the other
half. We have about 1200 periodical subscriptions.

We also do not circulate journals. To solve the problem of faculty
check-out, we provide a faculty copycard at the circulation desk. Faculty
sign out for the card, noting their department, and record the number of
copies made. Theoretically, we bill back the departments for copies made,
but in reality we tend to absorb the cost if the cost for a particular
department is small. I have been amazed at how well this has worked.
Before we invented this method, faculty had full check-out priviledges for
periodicals and some full runs were checked out! There was no uproar, very
little noise at all...everyone said they were glad we were providing the
copy cards and that they had actually felt guilty about checking out the
journals, but since we let them they did it. We still allow student or
faculty one-day checkouts when a periodical--because of illustrations
perhaps--is needed to show to a class.
