Z39.44 survey results Dee Douglas 26 Sep 1995 18:52 UTC

I didn't get a "lot" of replies to the Z39.44 survey. However, my intent
was just to get a general idea about use of the new standard among other
OCLC union list participants. I did get some good feedback. Thanks to all
who responded. A number of folks expressed an interest in the survey
results, so here it is:

-- Z39.44 SURVEY RESULTS -- (September 26, 1995)

No. Replies: 14 (representing 102 libraries)
Note: Responses were received from 9 different states.

Library Type: 11 academic, 1 public, 2 consortia groups*
* Note: one respondent represented 32 member libraries, the other
represented 56 libraries (a breakdown by library type was not given).

Only 2 libraries stated they do NOT use the new standard for serials
holding statements. These 2 continue to use the Z39.42 standard (neither
of these were the consortia group reps). There did not seem to be any
correlation between the size to the serials collection and use of the new
standard.

The level of specificity for reporting holdings was varied.
Level 4 = 4
Level 3A = 2
Level 3B = 7
Level 3 = 1 (using Z39.42)

Only one library stated they have made some effort to retrospectively
update existing LDR's to adhere to the new standard. The other 13
respondents reported updating LDR's to conform to Z39.44 ONLY when the LDR
is accessed for another reason (e.g., change in holdings).

To answer my own survey:
In Georgia the statewide GAC thru OCLC is called GOLD (Georgia Online
Database), and GOLD libraries are also members of SOLINET. The GOLD
membership is comprised of about 200 academic, public, and special
libraries. A GOLD Serials Committee establishes guidelines for the GOLD
serials union list. The Committee strongly encourages the member libraries
to use Z39.44 for serial holding statements. Holdings are reported at
Level 3, option B. As far as I know, none of the GOLD libraries are doing
any retrospective conversion of LDR's to Z39.44, although I believe most
everyone is updating to the new standard when an LDR is accessed for
another reason.

If anyone would still like to respond to the Z39.44 survey, I will continue
to accept replies until October 10th. Thanks.
