The Library at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for
the position of:

POSITION:               HEAD, MONOGRAPH CATALOGING SECTION

REPORT TO:              HEAD, CATALOG DEPARTMENT
SALARY AND RANK:        $36,108 - 55,476 (Associate Librarian I -
                        Librarian III).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general direction of the Department Head, the Head of Monograph
Cataloging Section is responsible for the cataloging and classification of
all monographs except East Asian language materials.  In addition to being
the Section Head/Team Leader, the incumbent also serves as the Principal
Monograph Cataloger.  The incumbent will hire, train, and supervise a
staff of approximately 10 FTE including 1 librarian, develop procedure
manuals, and perform cataloging as time permits.  The Department Head and
the Section Heads constitute the management team for the Department and
have responsibility for setting and implementing department goals and
priorities in support of division and library-wide goals and initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

*       A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited
        institution, or equivalent experience.

*       Several years of recent and increasingly responsible professional
        cataloging and supervisory experience in an academic or research
        library, including experience in managing a cataloging unit or project.

*       Substantial library automation experience, including OCLC or RLIN.

*       Demonstrated extensive knowledge of and work experience using AACR2,
        LCRIs, MARC formats, and Library of Congress classification and subject
        headings.

*       Awareness and commitment to national and international cataloging
        standards.

*       Reading knowledge of at least one modern Western language is required,
        French, German, or Spanish is desired.

*       Demonstrated strength in written, verbal, analytical, supervisory, and
        interpersonal skills.

*       Work experience with microcomputer applications in technical services.

*       Ability to work cooperatively, effectively, flexibly, and independently
        with all elements of a culturally-diverse community in a team based
        structure to the overall management of the Catalog Department.

*       Evidence of contribution to the profession.

Preferred:

*       Experience in training catalogers.
*       Managerial and planning skills.

Desired:

*       Work experience with an integrated library system, INNOPAC is desired.
*       Knowledge of NLM classification and subject headings.

THE CATALOG DEPARTMENT

The Catalog Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 30,000
items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files,
electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and
languages.  Including the Department Head, the staff includes 6
librarians, 19 full-time library assistants and a varying number of
student assistants.  The Department currently consists of five sections:
Monograph Cataloging, Catalog Maintenance/Authorities, East Asian,
Multimedia, and Serials.  The Department uses OCLC for cataloging and the
Innovative Interfaces Inc. system as the library's OPAC.  Current projects
include cataloging of documents, internet resources, investigation of
"fast cat", and the development of the Cataloger's Workstation.

THE LIBRARY

The UCI Libraries comprise the Main Library, the Science Library, and the
Medical Center Library.  The Main Library, which will undergo a major
renovation in 1996, primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Fine Arts,
Social Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management,
the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies.  The Science
Library, which opened in 1994, consolidating several branches, primarily
serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences,
Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information and
Computer Science.  The Medical Center Library serves the Medical Center
located 12 miles from the main campus.

The UCI Libraries recently implemented a new organizational structure
which more effectively aligns the libraries' activities with current and
future needs and which includes the use of teams in conjunction with
departments.  The library collection, supported by a budget of
approximately $4.0 million, consists of 1.6 million volumes and 17,000
current serial titles as well as a substantial microform collection.  The
Technical Services departments, including the Catalog Department, are
located in the Science Library.  The library has implemented the INNOPAC
integrated library system.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE

The University of California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal
foothills, five miles from the Pacific Ocean between San Diego and Los
Angeles.  The present enrollment is 17,092 students with a faculty of
approximately 1,000 including the Medical School.  The current student
population numbers 13,597 undergraduates, 2,324 graduate students, and
1,171 health sciences; ethnic/minority students represent about 65% of the
student body.  The University offers 29 doctoral programs in addition to
the M.D.

Candidates for appointment in the University of California Librarian
Series must have a professional background of competence, knowledge, and
experience to assure suitability for appointment.  Librarians at the
University of California, Irvine are academic appointees and receive
potential career status at the time of their initial appointment.
Librarians are periodically subject to peer review for merit increase
based on the following criteria: 1) Professional competence and quality of
service within the Library; 2) Professional activity outside the Library;
3) University and public service; and 4) Research and other activity.
They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per month
sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other perquisites
granted to non-faculty academic personnel.  The University has an
excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and
health insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of
salary.
