Ownership labelling of periodicals

Here at the Ekstrom Library, University of Louisville, we use a typical rubber
stamp "received" which also prints the date and the name of our library. As we
are checking-in the periodicals, we stamp their covers in any blank spot,
neatly aligning the stamp so that it doesn't look like a chimp did it. If the
cover is too glossy to hold ink, we stamp the inside cover. We never stamp
directly over a photo or drawing of anyone's face, no matter how goofy or
reprehensible they are. We use commercial stamp-pad ink; it is thick and not
archival. Security is ensured by using 3M Tattle-tapes. The stamp is our only
identifying mark until the periodicals are bound. Only periodicals (new and
old) going to our Special Collections department are spared the stamp.
