HEAD, CATALOGING DEPARTMENT, TULANE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY:
Reporting to the Assistant University Librarian for Technical Services,
the Head manages and leads the Cataloging Department in planning,
implementing, coordinating and evaluating cataloging activities in all
languages, subjects, and formats. The Head supervises 7 librarians and
12-13 support staff plus students. In all activities the goal is to
develop, through effective leadership, a service-oriented, efficient,
responsive staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee daily operation of the Department to ensure the
the establishment of monographic and serial bibliographic records,
creation and maintenance of authority file records, and revision or
recataloging of materials are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective
manner; Establish short and long-term goals and provide for the evaluation
of these goals and current programs; Continually examine and as necessary
adjust Cataloging objectives in relation to Library policies and goals in
light of changing circumstances; Determine appropriate cataloging
standards and policies and coordinate adherence to these standards.
Maintain current awareness of trends and developments in the profession
which may effect standards or policies; Establish priorities, plan
appropriate staffing levels, coordinate all activities of Cataloging and
provide for their evaluation; Supervise staff, ensure appropriate training
and timely evaluation, promote staff development; Plan, prepare, and
analyze reports and statistics; prepare policy and procedure manuals;
Serve as a liaison with all levels of library management on policy and
procedure. Interpret administrative decisions, directions, policies and
regulations to Cataloging staff; Maintain open lines of communication and
encourage the exchange of ideas and information; Collaborate with other
Library staff on matters relating to procedures of Cataloging; Assume
other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: ALA-accredited MLS; Several years experience (minimum 4 years
preferred) cataloging materials of various types and formats in a large
academic library; Supervisory experience (minimum 2 years) in an academic
library, including experience managing a cataloging or database management
unit or project; Demonstrated time management, analytical, and
organizational skills; Substantive library automation experience,
including experience with a bibliographic utility and an integrated local
system; Demonstrated experience in using AACR2, MARC formats, LC
classification, LCSH, and LCRI; Flexibility to manage a broad variety of
tasks with varying time pressures and constantly changing priorities;
Ability to provide motivation and direction to a large and diverse staff
as well as to take direction; Excellent interpersonal skills; Excellent
written and oral communication skills; Ability to promote, support, and
manage effective change for the most productive utilization of staff and
resources.
PREFERRED: Ability to work with a variety of modern European
languages; Participation in professional activities beyond the local level
and preferably at the national level; Ability to provide leadership
comfortably in a computer-intensive environment; Experience cataloging
serials; Experience with national cooperative cataloging programs.
THE ENVIRONMENT: Tulane University is a major private university. The
Library collection, supported by a materials budget of approximately $2.3
million, numbers approximately 2 million volumes. The Library currently
supports faculty and students in the humanities, social sciences,
sciences, and engineering. The Library maintains membership in the
Association of Research Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and
OCLC. The Cataloging Department catalogs approximately 39,000-40,000
titles per year. Technical Services staff work in a highly automated
environment using OCLC and NOTIS.
SALARY/BENEFITS: Rank and salary commensurate with experience, minimum
$38,000.00; Excellent benefits, choice of health plans, immediate tuition
