LIBRARIAN
The University of Waikato is located in Hamilton, a city within the North
Island of New Zealand with excellent recreational facilities and a
population of approximately 120,000 people. The University is an integral
part of a national network of New Zealand Universities and has a strong
regional character which reflects the demographic, cultural and economic
life of its region in which a significant proportion of the population are
Maori.
The University of Waikato provides an education of international quality in
a bi-cultural environment, based on excellence in teaching and research.
The University is seeking an experienced Librarian to assume responsibility
for the University Library. The position requires an accomplished manager
with the vision, knowledge, and skills to maintain the Library at the
forefront of technological advances and library management practices.
The University Library consists of a central library and two branches (Law
and Education), is fully automated and has a staff of seventy. Total
volumes exceed 730,000 and almost 6,000 serials are currently received.
The Librarian is accountable to the Vice-Chancellor and participates in the
overall strategic direction of the University as a member of the senior
management team. The Librarian is responsible for the development of
library policy and planning, and for developing, maintaining and managing
the provision of library services. This encompasses effective staff
management.
A University degree and graduate qualifications in Librarianship or
comparable and relevant qualifications and experience are essential.
Strongly developed interpersonal skills and dynamic leadership are
essential in what is a vital time of change and development. Candidates
should have proven managerial ability and be able to demonstrate
familiarity with technological advances as applicable to libraries. A
commitment to bi-culturalism and the wider community is also important.
