Serials Acquisitions Services Department

Columbia University Libraries seek an experienced serials or
acquisitions librarian to serve as the Head, Serials Acquisitions
Services Department. The department (2 professionals, 9 support staff)
provides acquisitions services for all (ca. 30,000) non-depository
serials, monographic series, and other standing orders for 17 library
sites. The materials include nonbook and electronic formats. Columbia
University Libraries processes serials in both a centralized and
decentralized manner. All materials are ordered, paid, and claimed
centrally; many are received centrally as well. Periodicals
are checked-in in the departmental libraries. The central Kardex has
been converted; miscellaneous titles held only in departmental
Kardexes are being converted as each site moves online for check-in.
The Head of SAS will be expected to administer and manage activities
pertaining to technical services aspects of serials acquisitions in
all formats, including vendor selection and performance. This includes
assigning areas of work, determining workflow and procedures,
monitoring quantity and quality of work, analyzing and resolving
problems, developing and using statistical and other management
reports. The incumbent is expected to manage the training and
implementation of online check-in, using NOTIS software, in the
departmental libraries. The Head of SAS serves as Columbia's primary
expert in the methods of acquiring and processing serials, monographic
series, and other standing orders.
Requirements are: an accredited MLS, or equivalent relevant serials
experience; previous serials or acquisitions experience at a
professional level; knowledge of serials librarianship, serials
bibliographic records, and library automation; knowledge of business
practices and the ability to apply that knowledge to established
fiscal procedures; ability to work in a large, complex and changing
library environment; effective written and oral communication skills;
managerial and analytical skills; sound judgment; strong supervisory
skills; working knowledge of one or more European languages
(preferably one Romance and one Germanic) including the ability to
understand general business terms. Experience with NOTIS, OCLC and/or
RLlN, and experience in a large research library are desirable.
Salary ranges are: Librarian I: $33,000-$42,900; Librarian II:
$35,000-$47,250; Librarian Ill: $38,000-$57,000. Excellent benefits
