We did a journal evaluation about 2 years ago to see which journals were
used a lot and which ones we could cancel. At the same time we looked at
our bound journals, and discovered several titles which had been
discontinued for several years and which had not been checked out much.
We started discarding titles which we had only for a few years, and which
did not seem to be important.

We also have to shift from time to time, because we replace many current
journals with microfiche after 2 years. WE normally start shifting in
certain areas only were we need room or have new room. Half a year ago we
got new shelves and now we are shifting starting with A, but because of a
lack of volunteers it stopped in the middle. We normally leave only room
for 2 years because of the microfiche replacement, but this will be
different for your library.

By the way, what are you doing with all the discarded journals? We have
been successful in selling part of them to a backissue dealer, and giving
the rest to people who send them to libraries in third world countries.

Good luck for your project!
