HEAD, CATALOG DEPARTMENT - SEARCH REOPENED The Library at the University of California, Irvine invites applications for the position of Head of the Catalog Department. This appointment will be in the Librarian Series at the Associate or Librarian rank. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general direction of the Assistant University Librarian for Technical Services, the Head of the Catalog Department is responsible for overall management and supervision of the Catalog Department. The Department Head participates in a team based organization and maintains communication with all other departments of the Library. Responsibilities include planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating Departmental operations, and supervising the Maintenance/Authorities Section. These operations provide cataloging and classification in all formats, including electronic resources, using the Library of Congress and/or National Library of Medicine standards. Incumbent is also responsible for setting policies, establishing goals and priorities, evaluating staff performance, providing leadership in professional growth and career development for all members of the department, supporting internal training programs, and delegating responsibility to section heads as appropriate. The Department Head is involved in the preparation of procedure manuals, statistical reports, budget requests, surveys, and studies. QUALIFICATIONS Required: A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent experience; several years of increasingly responsible professional cataloging and supervisory experience in an academic or research library, including experience in managing a cataloging unit or project; substantial library automation experience, preferably with OCLC or RLIN and an integrated library system. Demonstrated extensive knowledge of AACR2, MARC formats and Library of Congress classification and subject headings. Demonstrated strong administrative and analytical skills and experience including planning; effective oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills; ability to adapt to change; initiative; ability to contribute, in a team environment, to the overall management of Technical Services; awareness of major issues in the application of technology in academic libraries; evidence of contribution to the profession; and ability to work effectively, independently, and cooperatively with all elements of a culturally-diverse community. Desirable: Experience with the use and application of the National Library of Medicine classification and subject headings, the Innovative Interfaces integrated system, microcomputer applications and the interaction of multiple databases in a technical services environment; evidence of having worked with one or more modern European or East Asian languages. THE CATALOG DEPARTMENT The Catalog Department is responsible for cataloging approximately 30,000 items annually including monographs, serials, AV, music, computer files, electronic resources, and government publications for all subjects and languages. Including the Department Head, the staff includes 6 librarians, 19 full-time library assistants and a varying number of student assistants. The Department currently consists of seven sections: Adaptive Cataloging, Catalog Maintenance/Authorities, East Asian, Humanities/Social Sciences, Multimedia, Science/Medicine, and Serials. As part of a library-wide reorganization plan, the department will bring together into a single unit those sections responsible for cataloging monographs with the exception of East Asian language publications. The Department uses OCLC for cataloging and Innovative Interfaces for maintenance of library holdings in the library's OPAC. Projects currently underway include transferring the MARCIVE conversion project and document cataloging into Technical Services, implementation of "fast cat" work streams, and investigation of the Cataloger's Desktop software for general use within the Department. THE LIBRARY The UCI Libraries comprise the Main Library, the Science Library, and the Medical Center Library. The Main Library, which will undergo a major renovation in 1996, primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management, the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies. The Science Library, which opened in 1994, consolidating several branches, primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of Information and Computer Science. The Medical Center Library serves the Medical Center located 12 miles from the main campus. The UCI Libraries recently implemented a new organizational structure which more effectively aligns the libraries' activities with current and future needs and which includes the use of teams in conjunction with departments. The library collection, supported by a budget of approximately $4.0 million, consists of 1.6 million volumes and 17,000 current serial titles as well as a substantial microform collection. The Technical Services departments, including the Catalog Department, are located in the Science Library. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE The University of California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal foothills, forty miles south of Los Angeles and five miles from the Pacific Ocean. The present enrollment is 17,092 students with a faculty of approximately 1,000 including the Medical School. The current student population numbers 13,597 undergraduates, 2,324 graduate students, and 1,171 health sciences; ethnic/minority students represent about 65% of the student body. The University offers 29 doctoral programs in addition to the M.D. Candidates for appointment in the University of California Librarian Series must have a professional background of competence, knowledge, and experience to assure suitability for appointment. Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees and receive potential career status at the time of their initial appointment. Librarians are periodically subject to peer review for merit increase based on the following criteria: 1) Professional competence and quality of service within the Library; 2) Professional activity outside the Library; 3) University and public service; and 4) Research and other activity. They are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel. The University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of group life and health insurance plans. Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary. SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of $39,648 - 55,476 (Associate Librarian III - Librarian III).
