Position Available: Serials Cataloger

Salary:             Assistant Librarian, step III to
                    Associate Librarian, step III -
                    $32,544 to $39,648 per year.  Appointment
                    rank and salary based on qualifications and
                    experience.  Open immediately.

Responsibilities:   Under the general direction of the head of
                    the serials department, the serials
                    cataloger is responsible for developing
                    local serials cataloging policy and
                    documentation; provides training and
                    retraining in serials cataloging and the
                    use of on-line systems; serves as the
                    department's primary resource person on
                    serials cataloging issues; catalogs and
                    classifies serials in a variety of
                    languages and formats using AACR2r, LC
                    Classification and LCSH.  The serials
                    cataloger takes a lead role in cataloging
                    and formulating bibliographic control and
                    access policies for electronic serials and
                    software.  Participates in planning and
                    decision-making for the department, and
                    serves on library committees.

                    The library uses INNOPAC for acquisitions
                    and serials control; the DRA system for
                    catalog management and circulation; and,
                    the University of California MELVYL system
                    as its online catalog.  OCLC is the
                    library's utility for cataloging and
                    interlibrary loan.

                    The Serials Department (2 librarians, 18
                    classified staff) is responsible for
                    acquisition, receipt, and cataloging of
                    serials in a variety of formats and
                    languages.  The Serials Department and the
                    Catalog Department (4 librarians, 25
                    classified staff responsible for cataloging
                    and database maintenance for monograph
                    materials in a variety of formats and
                    languages) are currently going through a
                    process that may lead to consolidation of
                    tasks and/or functions.  Therefore, we are
                    looking for an individual who is flexible
                    and capable of initiating change.

Qualifications:     Master's degree in librarianship from an
                    ALA-accredited institution or its
                    equivalent.  Minimum of two years of post-
                    MLS serial cataloging experience in an
                    academic or research library required;
                    working knowledge of AACR2r, Library of
                    Congress classification and subject
                    headings, and the MARC formats required;
                    reading knowledge of at least one or more
                    foreign languages required; recent
                    experience with at least one bibliographic
                    utility and local library system required;
                    experience cataloging electronic formats
                    desirable; experience cataloging monographs
                    desirable; significant training/teaching
                    and documentation preparation experience
                    desirable; supervisory and/or management
                    experience desirable; excellent analytical
                    and problem-solving skills required; and,
                    demonstrated ability to work effectively
                    with public and technical services staff at
                    all levels required.

Benefits:          Librarians are academic appointees.  They
                   earn 24 days of vacation and 12 days of
                   sick leave per annum.  The University has
                   an excellent retirement system which is
