Cataloging in acquisitions

The Cataloging Department at Penn State is reorganizing. We are currently
divided into Copy Cataloging and Original Cataloging. In Original Cataloging
we have one professional serials cataloger, and three Library Assistants
who do complex copy and some original cataloging (descriptive only). In Copy
Cataloging we have three processors and one supervisor who work on serials.
They also work on a variety of other formats, including computer files,
looseleafs, rare books, regular monos, and maintenance. In addition to
referrals from Copy Cataloging, Orginal Cataloging receives a number of
referrals from the check in staff who are in Acquisitions. It has been
proposed that the Original Cataloging Staff and one or more Copy Catalogers
move to join the Serials Team in Acquisitions. We realize that we have
things in common with both groups, and that we would be losing and gaining
certain advantages if we move.
We would like to hear from Serials Cataloging Librarians and Staff who have
worked in both cataloging and acquisitions departments, or who have strong
opinions about the advantages and disadvantages of both settings.
Please respond directly to me and I will summarize for the list.
