UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SYSTEM Position Announcement Electronic Text Librarian The University Library System is seeking an Electronic Text Librarian. Responsibilities: The Electronic Text Librarian is a faculty librarian position reporting to the Assistant Director for Automated and Technical Services. The responsibilities of this position encompass a broad range of activities related to the development and implementation of electronic text and digital document services at the University of Pittsburgh. The incumbent is also expected to participate in planning and problem solving related to technological applications within Automated and Technical Services. Participates in digital technology related research and development efforts. Leads the planning, development, and implementation of electronic text services for the University Library System including serving as chair of the Electronic Text Project Team during the research and development phase. Guides the Project Team and staff with ongoing responsibilities related to electronic text services in the creation of specific electronic editions and their access over the network. Maintains expertise in the Standard Generalized Markup Language, the Text Encoding Initiative, and SGML text markup software and trains library staff in their use. Writes software programs as necessary. Establishes and maintains expertise in World Wide Web server software, the Hypertext Markup Language, WWW client software, and writing scripts for serving information through the Hypertext Transfer Protocol/Common Gateway Interface. Conducts analysis and specifies software and hardware systems to support electronic text and digital document creation, processing, and network serving applications. Installs, configures, and is the system administrator for the server dedicated to text-serving over the network. Installs, configures and maintains software to support network text-serving applications. Participates in proposal writing and development activities to support electronic text services and other information technology initiatives. Works to develop new and creative library services and products based in electronic text and digital document technologies. Serves on the Library Information Technology Team and Network Resources Committee to establish policies and procedures for the collection, organization, and access to electronic texts and digital documents. Works in cooperation with other University units involved with networked information services and/or electronic and digital text creation or services including Computing and Information Services (CIS) and the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). Develops and maintains knowledge of the general and current state-of-the-art in technologies related to the creation of and access to electronic tests, scanning and optical character recognition and related methods of digital preservation. Understands the comparisons and issues of bibliographic control and their relationships to electronic text markup and encoding. Participates in and contributes to professional organizations and publications. Performs related duties as assigned or needed. As a faculty member in the University Library System, the incumbent participates in shared collegial decision making and planning, and is expected to: participate actively in committees and special ad hoc projects; establish and maintain communication with faculty and patrons in other areas of the University, serve the need for information and access to information resources, and to make contributions to the library profession in general and engage in professional development activities. Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited MLS, MSIS, or recognized equivalent. Minimum of three years relevant library experience. Experience with electronic text serving systems and World Wide Web serving software, online integrated library systems, wide-area or campus networks, the Internet, and electronic resource sharing. Preferred: Demonstrated training, presentation, and documentation skills. Demonstrated project management experience. Thorough knowledge of SGML, related text structuring standards and markup languages; experience in applying the Text Encoding Initiative DTD. Knowledge of MARC bibliographic coding and demonstrated experience and interest in the field of cataloging and the organization of networked information. Experience with OCR systems, optical scanning and related technologies, in a library-applications environment. Experience with maintaining systems in a Novell Netware, LANWorkplace, and TCP/IP environment. Working knowledge of two foreign languages. Record of professional involvement and publications in the field of networked information. Salary: $28,000 minimum, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
