GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  The Center for Research Libraries seeks a
knowledgeable and creative professional to provide leadership as Head of
the Acquisitions Department.  The Center for Research Libraries (an ARL
member) is an international cooperative organization whose 126 members are
academic and research institutions having substantial libraries.  The
Center's collections contain more than 3.7 million volumes and 1.4 million
microforms that complement and supplement the collections of North American
academic and research libraries through interlibrary loan and document
delivery.  The Center's primary acquisitions include foreign doctoral
dissertations, major microform sets, foreign documents, and more than
14,000 current serial titles, a number of which are procured through
exchange agreements.
        The Center has used OCLC since 1983 and also has access to the RLIN
database.  In April 1992, Innovative Interfaces' OPAC and Cataloging
modules were installed and in October 1993, the Acquisitions and Serials
modules were added.  As a result, the Center staff  have been re-evaluating
work flow, job descriptions and staffing levels in order to implement and
coordinate automation successfully  and to position the Center for future
changes.

JOB SUMMARY:  The Head of Acquisitions manages and administers the
operations of the Acquisitions Department (consisting of the Serials and
Monographs sections) to ensure accurate and efficient acquiring and
claiming, and general fiscal accountability for the Center's monographs,
serials, foreign documents, and exchange materials.  There are 10 FTE staff
in the department:  two professional, and eight clerical.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited
library school.  Knowledge of at least one foreign language as well as
demonstrated ability to work with materials in a variety of foreign
languages.   Five years' professional experience in an academic library in
acquisitions and/or serials.  Demonstrated knowledge of acquisitions and
serials technical functions (e.g., use of machine-readable bibliographic
records in acquisitions work, knowledge of detailed record-keeping, problem
solving, and follow through).  Detailed knowledge of at least one national
bibliographic system (OCLC, RLIN, etc.) as well as a nationally recognized
automated integrated library system (e.g., Innovative Interfaces, NOTIS,
DRA, DYNIX, etc.) for Serials and/or Acquisitions is mandatory.  (Serials
experience is a definite plus.)  Minimum three years' supervisory
experience in acquisitions or serials. Proven managerial skills to include
organizing work flow and staff efficiently, problem-solving, and proven
leadership abilities in a quickly changing environment.  Superior oral and
written skills are also a must.

SALARY BENEFITS:  $37,200-$55,600 annually, appointment level depending on
experience and qualifications.  Company paid medical, TIAA/CREF Retirement
Plan, life insurance, and self-paid dental insurance.  22 vacation days, 15
sick days, and 10 holidays annually.
