In addition to the explanation of the SICI bar code (really
called the SISAC Bar Code Symbol), you should check that your new
scanner is equipped to scan CODE 128, which is the symbology in
which the SICI is encoded.  If you need more information about
the SISAC Bar Code Symbol, the _Serial Item Identifier:  Bar Code
Symbol Implementation Guidelines_ are available from my office
for $7.25.  These Guidelines describe each of the steps journal
publishers would take to create and print a bar coded version of
the ANSI/NISO Standard Serial Item & Contribution Identifier
(SICI) on the covers of scientific, technical journals.  It also
provides details that enable librarians to translate the content
of these symbols back into the SICI for use in automated check-in
systems.
