The barcodes you see which include issue information are SICI
barcodes. (SICI stands for Serial Item and Contribution
Identifier). They are based on the ANSI standard developed by
SISAC (Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committee). It is
SISAC's hope that you *will* be able to use them for check-in.
As far as I know (and I hope to be corrected if wrong) one
system already supports the use of the SICI barcode for
check-in, and that is Unicorn by Sirsi. I believe it is on the
drawing boards for other systems.

About the barcode wands... we currently use the hand-held
pens for wanding in our item records in the serials
department. It is my impression that the desk-stand model is
more efficient in the workflow than the hand- held wand. Can
anyone confirm or deny this impression? We're thinking about
the possibility of upgrading or changing some of the
equipment.

What about the future of barcodes & UPC codes.... I noticed
some publishers have codes on the back of the journals that
seem to include the journal's volume number, part, date, etc.
Will we be able to use these for check-in in the future, & if
so, what kind of barcode wand/stand should we be thinking
about buying?

Thanks for any information you can give...
