HEAD OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHIC CONTROL DEPARTMENT
The Earl Gregg Swem Library of the College of William and Mary is seeking a
Head of the Bibliographic Control Department. This is a 12-month
Professional Faculty position with a salary range of $32,000-$35,000.

ENVIRONMENT: This position reports to the Assistant Dean of University
Libraries for Automation and Bibliographic Control. There are two
professionals and eight paraprofessionals in the department. The College of
William and Mary is a state-supported institution. The library will be
implementing a second generation automated library system during the summer
of 1995. The building is fully networked and all staff have state-of-the-art
equipment.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans, directs, and coordinates the bibliographic
control functions of the library, including creation of catalog records for
materials acquired for the library's collections and its branch libraries,
maintenance of bibliographic, authority, and inventory records in the
William and Mary online union catalog, and preparation of materials for the
stacks. Provides leadership in formulating and carrying out department and
library-wide goals and objectives. Performs cataloging, especially original
cataloging of more difficult items. Responsible for supervision, including
hiring, training, and evaluating department staff. Prepares budget requests
and reports, as required. Participates in the ongoing development and
application of automated systems in support of the library�s mission. As
appropriate, serves as liaison for an academic department or school with
responsibilities for facilitating communication with faculty, orienting new
faculty, providing collection development assistance, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent. Evidence of
management and supervisory experience (in a cataloging unit or for a special
project). Minimum of two years cataloging experience. Detailed knowledge of
and
experience with AACR2 and LC cataloging practices, LC classification and
subject headings, MARC formats, OCLC, and automated library information
systems. Demonstrated leadership, management, and human relations skills.
Ability to articulate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work cooperatively with others. Effective organizational skills.
Ability to prioritize, solve problems creatively and constructively, cope
with a changing environment, and be self-motivated. General knowledge of all
operations in an academic library. Strong commitment to a service
orientation for all clients (within and outside the library). Desirable:
Working knowledge of at least one foreign language. Experience working with
serials cataloging. Record of active involvement in local, regional, state
and/or national library professional organizations.
