SUBJ: Russian Consulate Seeks Journals

The Russian Consulate General of Yekaterinburg, Russia, has asked the U.S.
European Office of Aerospace Research and Development office to seek out back
issues of scientific and technological journals. He told the EOARD office
that many Russian institutes of learning and scientific centers in his area
have had to discontinue purchasing western journals due to dwindling funds.
They are most interested in gifts of collections or low cost back issues.

Yekaterinburg (named for Catherine I) has a population of over 1 million and
is located a thousand miles east of Moscow. It is "one of the most important
industrial centers of Russia, especially for heavy engineering. Metallurgical
and chemical machinery, turbines, diesels, and ball bearings head a long list
of engineering products manufactured there." It has "numerous institutions of
higher education, including the Urals A. M. Gorky State University...(and) the
Urals branch of the Academy of Sciences and many scientific-research estab-
lishments." (Encyclopedia Britannica)

I have explained to our EOARD contact, that the Library of Congress has a
strong gifts and exchange program, and that the Association of Research
Libraries might be able to help. I also mentioned such back issue sources as
Jerry Alper, Blackwell, James Curran, Alfred Jaeger, Research Periodicals and
Book Services, Universal Serials and Books Exchange, and Zeitlin. I also
told him about NASIG's "Directory of Back Issue Dealers," however, I was
recently told it is now a bit dated.

Can anyone on the Listserv offer advice on who might have journals to donate
or offer other advice? If you represent one of the above institutes or
companies, please send me your mailing and e-mail address, and any pertinent
information as we do not own the Directory.

Please reply to me, not the Listserv at: bensonwo@wl.wpafb.af.mil

Thank you.
