Subject: special numbered issues
In reference to the message sent by Kevin Randall on Feb. 2, 1995,
how interesting (& brave) that someone should inquire about these
awful offspring of serials. I hate them too, mostly because they
don't fit neatly into any one method of treatment, and thus
usually require a case-by-case decision.
Basically, it if carries the numbering of the journal, I
try and keep it with the journal, ESPECIALLY if it's
a regular numbered issue (in the theory that it will
be cited as part of the journal). We add notes to
the bib & internal records, and access points for
the special title (525, 710/730).
If it doesn't reference the designation of the
title it comes with, or if a subject bibliographer
feels that it needs separate access, we will
catalog it separately & link it to the bib
record (580/770/772), retaining only the
latest edition in most cases.
How to treat other "things" that come with
serials could provide material for a much
longer discourse, maybe even a monograph
(if there's ever enough time)! Good luck!
