University of Maryland at College Park Libraries
POSITION: Head, Cataloging Department (Librarian II)
Full-time 12 month appointment.
SALARY: Commensurate with experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as Department Head for 15 professional librarians
and 14 library technical assistants. Provides management and
support for four units: Rapid Cataloging; Monograph
Cataloging; Serial Cataloging and Authority Control.
Responsible for ensuring the cataloging of all library
materials in all formats in a timely and cost-effective manner.
UMCP Libraries catalog on OCLC and are an enhance library for
monographs and music. UMCP Libraries are a member of RLG and
will be tape-loading cataloging records into the RLIN database.
UMCP Libraries participate in NCCP, NACO, and create subject
headings for LC. UMCP Libraries' local system is VICTOR, a
CARL Corp. system with all modules operational. Authority
control functions will be added in the coming year.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required - ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library
Science. Five years of professional experience in an academic
or research library, two of which must have been in
administration or management of a cataloging or database
management effort. Must have a thorough knowledge of
cataloging and technical services including demonstrated
experience in cataloging. Must have the ability to manage a
broad variety of tasks in response to varying time pressures
and constantly changing priorities, to take direction as well
as provide direction and motivation to a large staff, and the
ability to interact effectively with a broad variety of staff
within and outside Technical Services. Must also have the
ability to promote, support and manage effective change for the
greatest benefit in the utilization of staff and other
resources. Must have the ability to communicate and write
effectively.
BENEFITS: 22 days annual & 3 personal days; 14 paid holidays; 15 days
