Whether the "title added entry" has any meaning totally depends on the system
you are using.  In OCLC, all 246's are indexed and it makes no difference for
searching or display.  In RLIN, all 246's are indexed, but the LONg display
shows tracings in a card-like display and the 1st indicator controls whether it
displays there.

Some local systems are indicator-sensitive so the library can tell it
whether to display a note in the OPAC based on the first indicator.  For
example:

246 00 Directory of international trade = $b Directorio de intercambio
       internacional
246 31 Directorio de intercambio internacional

If your system displays 246's without regard to indicators, you might get an
OPAC display like this:

TITLE         Directory of international trade = Directorio de intercambio
              internacional
OTHER TITLE   Directorio de intercambio internacional

Whereas a system that only displays fields with a first indicator "0" or "1"
would only display:

TITLE         Directory of international trade = Directorio de intercambio
              internacional

In my library the display is not controlled by the first indicator, so we will
accept whatever we find on copy.  For original cataloging, however, we are
careful to code 246's carefully for the benefit of other libraries which depend
on this indicator for card production or OPAC display.

I have posted a "cheat sheet" for format integration for books on AUTOCAT which
spells out the uses of each indicator that I put together for a workshop for
books catalogers.  Next week I'm giving a workshop for serials catalogers and
will post a similar "cheat sheet" for serials here.

Does anyone know the definition of "title added entry" as it is
used in the 246, 1st indicator.

I thought that it referred to card production only.  A colleague
believes it refers to indexing in one's local system.  I'm not
sure when we would add a 246 and not index it.
