Subject: Document Delivery
Dear Colleages: A few weeks ago I posted a query on COLLDV-L and SERIALST
on allocating funds for document delivery (e.g., CARL UnCover) in lieu of
subscriptions. I received 13 responses; 12 were asking for the results, 1
informational. I also contacted 3 libraries individually. The response to
the listserv stated that they cancelled a certain number of titles. They
took the recorded uses of the cancelled titles (from reshelving studies),
divided by 2, and then multiplied by $15 as an average cost per article. I
would interpret the formula as follows:
no. of titles cancelled x no. of uses = X
X/2=Y (no. titles x no. of uses divided by 2)
Y x $15=allocation
One library I contacted allocated a lump sum and then set up individual
accounts for researchers up to a certain $ amount. Another had a lump sum
for document delivery (from several vendors) that also included a full-time
salary and student salaries. The third set up user profiles of tables of
contents pages, edited them, and distributed them to researchers.
Thanks to all who responded.
