We have a modest adopt-a-journal program that is aimed at student
service groups on campus. We distribute a list of possible "adoptees"
that are reasonably priced and have wide appeal. We also work with them
if they have a particular title they are interested in. Our two
stipulations are 1) adoptees must be NEW titles to the collection and
2) the committment must be for a minimum of 5 years. So far we have
only had a few serious inqueries; it is much easier to donate books.
We ask that the group donate the funds and let us handle the
subscription arrangements; we do not accept unsolicited subscriptions
or subscriptions entered in our behalf. Occasionally we receive
subscription donations from faculty but this is rare; mostly they give
us back runs of stuff out of their office when they retire or are
spring cleaning.

I would say as long as you insist that the person or group give money
and not have them try to place for the subscription for you, you can
find a way to handle it. The goodwill will go a long way. However, on a
large scale, such programs are usually inefficient. Keep it small and
it is not too difficult to handle.
