Re: Classified periodicals

In the UCLA Research Library we classify periodicals and
intershelve bound volumes with monographs.
We're planning a big change for unbound issues. Presently we
shelve the more popular and significant titles in general
subject categories ("Western Europe," "Women's Studies," "Art &
Architecture," etc.), an arrangement that we believe facilitates
browsing. The remainder (about 80% of the titles) are shelved
alphabetically by title. Next year we're going to merge unbound
government publications with our current unbound periodicals
collection, and so we're taking the opportunity to change the
whole collection (which we estimate will be 9,000 titles) to
call-number order. We expect that this will still enable
browsing, and will make access easier, since users will need
only the call number to locate holdings.
