Dual numbering schemes Walter High 12 Oct 1994 23:57 UTC

                      Dual numbering schemes
Serialsters:
Last week Kevin Randall asked why publishers sometimes
adopt dual numbering schemes. I can give an instance of a
case when I asked a publisher to restore a dual numbering
scheme that had been dropped. The DLA bulletin (Division
of Library Automation at the University of California) started
with a dual numbering scheme, but dropped it. Because the
publication was irregular, one could never be sure whether
an issue had been missed. When v. 6, no. 1 arrived, how
did you know if the previous volume ended with the v. 5,
no. 3 you received or if there was a v. 5, no. 4 you didn't
get? The whole numbering solves that problem. They have
restored the whole numbering and claiming is no longer a
questionable practice with this title.
