We at Bates College are getting closer to implementing our periodicals use
study, but there are a couple more questions I'd like to ask.  Since we're
an Innovative site, I've searched the Innopac archives and posted to the
Innopac list; now I'd like broader input.

In a perfect world, I would employ a portable barcode scanner for this
study, but that requires the usual soul- (to say nothing of pocket-)
searching and justification.  Waiting for it would also push our start
date back, and some of us are getting impatient.  The study methodology
doesn't require a portable scanner, however, so this is a sort of
"shopping" request.

What experience have people had with using portable barcode scanners?
Which work well, which break all the time, which are easy/difficult to
upload into [your] sytem, other applications for the unit; all the nitty
gritty stuff.
