At the University of Notre Dame, Hesburgh Library once the material
is charged to the commerical binder in NOTIS it is unavailable to patrons,
even if it is still in the building, the material is probably boxed and
we can't go through 25 boxes each time we receive a request. The patron
can then place a HOLD on the material and will be notified by the Access
Services staff upon return from the commercial binder (our commercial
binder provides a two (2) week turn around) or the patron will be directed
to our Inter Library Loan department.

If the material is charged to the Bindery Prep. Unit the patron may
complete a MATERIALS RETRIEVAL FORM at any Access Services desk or
the Reference desk. The materials requested will be retrieved within
24 hrs. by the Bindery Prep. Unit staff or Preservation staff and placed
in the Reserve Book Room for use there for three (3) days.

We have been using this method since 1991 and have never had a complaint.

As for binding history, the automated binding system that we use (GOLDBACS)
has a binding history function, which I use frequently.

I hope this helps.
