This summer we put up some of those plastic sleeves for labels on the wood
shelves in our periodical reading room. Ours started falling down within
days even though we'd followed the instructions about putting them on a
clean, dry surface. It must be the adhesive itself because the adhesive
strips are left behind on the shelves just as often as they remain on the
sleeves which have fallen (slid!) off.
I've started putting Norbond glue ("liquid plastic adhesive", from Demco) on
the back of the sleeve, positioning the sleeve on the shelf and putting a
strip of scotch tape over it to hold it up until the glue is dry. Once the
glue is dry, I (or a student worker) remove the tape and, **so far**, I
haven't had any problems with the glued sleeves coming off. Of course,
they've only been up a couple months, at most, so I'm still keeping my fingers
crossed. I did have a couple of sleeves that were glued shut because the
glue oozed over the top and into the sleeve, so be careful how much glue you
put on the back.
This is time-consuming so, if anyone has a better fix-it tip......
