Subject: H.R. 4454 Action Alert
H. R. 4454, the Legislative Appropriations Bill for 1995, will most
likely come before the full Senate Appropriation's Committee either this
week or next week. At anyrate the time schedule for the Senate to
consider this bill is on a fast track. It is most imperative that those
concerned about cuts to the Superintendent of Documents Salaries and
Expenses budget write their Senators and ask that the $1.5 million
dollars cut by the House be restored. This money was to be used to help
distribute electronic information to the Depository Library Program. If
the money is not restored the GPO's entry into the Internet will be
slowed and hampered.
Please ask your Senators to support the full budget request of
$32,100,000 dollars for the Superintendent of Documents' Salaries and
Expenses Budget. Remind them that the Depository Libraries in their
state need to receive the electronic information this budget would help
to provide to better serve their voting constituents--Everyone BENEFITS
no one LOSES!! The restored $1.5 million is a small price to pay for the
greater good it will bring to all citizens. The restoration will greatly
aid the Government Printing Office to fully deliver the electronic
services called for in P. L. 103-40 (the Government Printing Office
Electronic Information Access Enhancement Act of 1993), load appropriate
software needed to carry out the program, improve computer hardware to
handle increased loads, and provide adequate service and support for the
new technology.
