Incorrect ISSN Regina R. Reynolds 16 May 1994 20:28 UTC

I'm writing to confirm Cindy Hepfer's posting about dealing with incorrect
ISSN printed on current serials. NSDP does have a form letter that we
send to publishers and consider it one of our critical functions to monitor
the use of the ISSN in this way. Since publishers often catch their own
errors and correct them on the next issue, we include the designation of
the issue on which the ISSN was incorrectly printed in our form letter.
Therefore, we do request a photocopy of the incorrectly printed ISSN which
also shows the designation of the issue in question.

Dealing with incorrect ISSN printed on issues from non-U.S. publishers is
more complicated, in that we need to contact the ISSN center in the country
of publication, but we are willing to do this for recent ISSN errors. In
the case of both U.S. and non-U.S. incorrect ISSN, we add the incorrect
number in subfield y of field 022 so that records can be retrieved by both
the correct and incorretly printed ISSN.

We in NSDP are very aware of the increasing importance of correctly printed
ISSN and encourage you to help be our "eyes" in the case of those publications
we don't have the opportunity to see.
