Arrangement of Current Periodicals SHARON L. WILES-YOUNG 12 May 1994 19:40 UTC

This summer the Serials Dept. at Lehigh University in the Fairchild
Library will be rearranging our current periodical collection
of about 3500 titles. We are having more shelving installed and
we are refiling the initialisms letter by letter like the OPACs do
instead of filing them at the beginning of the file. At this point,
we are still filing the Science, Math & Social Science current
periodicals in separate alphabetical ranges. The past reasons for
this arrangement is the faculty only want to scan through the journals
in their areas and that we have too big a collection to have it all
    in one alphabetical range.

The QUESTION is: How do libraries handle this number or larger
collections? If it is in one alphabetical range not subdivided by
broad subject areas, have there been any comments made on the
    arrangement?

Please respond to me directly. Your answers will help me with my
    proposal! Thank-you very much
