ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN, Acquisitions Department, Sterling
Memorial Library. Yale University. Minimum rank:
Librarian II.
Responsibilities: The Acquisitions Department supports
acquisition, description and access to the collections of
the Yale University Library. It provides system-wide
leadership in the development of policies and practices and
supports dispersed acquisitions activities. Under the
direction of the Chief Acquisitions Librarian, the
Acquisitions Librarian shares responsibility for management
of the department, participates in system-wide planning of
acquisitions and serials services, and supervises receiving
operations of the Serials Support and Monograph Support
Teams, which include initial processing of invoices and
cataloging on receipt. The Acquisitions Librarian serves as
assistant department head; conducts appropriate negotiations
with vendors and publishers; assists in analyzing
acquisitions programs and in evaluation of vendor services;
coordinates, plans and monitors special projects; supports
budget planning through data gathering and analysis; and
prepares administrative reports and planning documents. The
Acquisitions Librarian is expected to serve as system-wide
expert for serial technical operations; coordinate standards
for receiving practices across the Yale Library system;
monitor and implement changes in national standards for
records management and bibliographic control; and develop
documentation and training materials. The Acquisitions
Librarian also serves as the bibliographic expert for the
department and serves as liaison to Processing Services on
cataloging and bibliographic matters. The incumbent is
expected to be professionally active and to participate in
national initiatives for serials and acquisitions.
Qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
Two or more years professional experience in acquisitions or
serials in an academic or research library. Knowledge of
records management and the MARC bibliographic and holdings
formats. Experience with microcomputers and automated
library systems, including RLIN or OCLC. Knowledge of at
least one foreign language. Excellent oral and written
communication skills. Excellent analytical skills.
Demonstrated supervisory ability. Strong service-
orientation. Demonstrated ability to work independently and
with others in a rapidly changing and demanding environment.
Salary and Benefits: Competitive salary based on the
successful candidate's qualifications and experience; from a
minimum of $33,700. Full benefits package including 22
vacation days and 17 holiday, recess, and personal days;
