We retain past year of all newspaper subscriptions, except for a few, for
which we retain past six months.  Each month has a separate shelf and we
do not seem to have a serious problem, although student assistants detest
"tidying up" when necessary.

We receive all newspapers on film or cd-rom, but many patrons prefer
browsing when they do not have an exact cite.  As for cd-roms, many
patrons want the graphics, illustrations, photos, etc., which cd's do
not always provide.
